New Years Inspiration: A Pep Talk To Make This The Best Year Yet

It’s been a while since I’ve been around these parts. About four months, in fact. But I’m back. And I have an important reason why.

It’s the new year. It’s 20-freakin-18. And this is about to be the best year yet.

You know why? Because of you.

You’re about to make this the best year of your life.

Listen, I didn’t come here to get all cheesy on you. I just feel this idea. Very deeply in my bones. I feel strongly that we can all do big and small things every day to make each week, each month, each season, and the entire year something magical.

Perhaps you completed the December Reflection Challenge I did with you one winter  and you’ve just finished looking back on what 2017 had to offer. Hopefully you’re full of pride, joy, and a sense of peace that you accomplished everything you dreamed last year.

Maybe you’re not.

Either way, it doesn’t matter. Because today is January 1st. Today is the day everything starts new. All the memories, accomplishments, failures, setbacks, and launching pads from last year don’t matter any more. It’s a clean slate.

We love clean slates in our society. We love them because we all mess up. We all need second chances. We all need fresh mornings because we are human, and we stumble, and we get caught up in things we shouldn’t, and we lose sight of what matters most to us.

I think that’s why we love New Years. At midnight last night, we whooped and hollered and threw confetti in the air and kissed our loved ones, because we were so excited about new chapters. We’re turning the page together.

And guess what’s most thrilling about that? You decide what goes on the next page.

So what’s it going to be?

Will you spend another year focusing on the same things that distracted you from your goals and ambitions last year? Will you waste time scrolling those time-sucking social media accounts, stalking the people whose lives you envy rather than creating a life you love? Will you re-watch New Girl for the 3rd time instead of popping up off the couch and pursuing big adventures? Will you continue to sit complacent in the same unfulfilling relationships when you could be fostering healthy ones?

Or are you going to do it differently this time?

Ask yourself this question: if this was the best year of your life, what would it look like?

Go ahead. Dream it up. I don’t care if it seems ridiculous or scary or weird. I don’t care if it includes things you think you shouldn’t want or things other people would be upset about.

This is your fantasy. You’re the one with the pen.

You finished?

Now ask yourself this: how are you going to make your best year happen?

It’s not going to happen without changes. Someone once told me that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

If you want the same year you had last year, do the same things. If you want this year to be even bigger, better, and brighter, do it differently.

(My recommendation? Write this down somewhere. Put it on the first page of a new journal or scribble it on a sticky note you’ll place on your bedroom mirror.)

Congratulate yourself. You have taken the first step. You’ve dreamed, and you’ve planned.

And from here on out, we’re going to keep each other accountable, friends.

This year, The Next Seven is going to keep providing you inspiration, tips, and tricks to live your best life. We’ll keep talking about way to seek adventure, even in the mundane of the every day. We’ll keep setting big goals and accomplishing them. We’ll continue nurturing our relationships so they grow and shine. And we’ll always pursue our best selves through personal growth.

You’re doing this right. You’re taking the big leap into the year with your hopes and dreams on your back and an intention in your heart to make it all happen. I’ll be right here supporting you, every step of the way.

Welcome to the New Year. Let’s get started.
